TATA Steel awards and fellowship to Adivasi students

Under the aegis of TATA Steel, the Corporate Sustainability Services today awarded the Moodie Endowment Jyoti and Fellowship certificates to 414 deserving students at Michael John Auditorium. At the event which took place at Michael John Auditorium, about 304 students received the Jyoti Scholarship while 110 were awarded the Moodie Endowment certificate.

 

Both these scholarships are meant to facilitate higher level education of deserving students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan districts of Jharkhand. The Moodie Endowment program takes students from Midnapur, Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal in its fold as well.

 

Addressing the vast gathering of students, the chief guest Mr Sitaram Bari deputy development commissioner of East Singhbhum said "I applaud the effort undertaken by TATA Steel towards the social and economic development of the tribal people, especially with respect to education. Students here should make it a point to make the best use of the scholarship awarded and emerge as successful citizens of the country." Mr Prabal Chowdhury assistant commissioner, income tax and guest of honor on this occasion also lauded this initiative of TATA Steel.

 

Jyoti Fellowship is a financial assistance program for meritorious scheduled caste or scheduled tribe students that was initiated in 1990. The fellowship is open to all SC/ST students who are permanent residents of Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts of Jharkhand. This year, the total amount that is being awarded to the students is INR 1338000. In the last five years, TATA Steel has awarded a total of 1,12,50,000 to students towards education.

 

In addition to this, TATA Steel also supports the education of meritorious tribal students through Moodie Endowment program, a funding by Mr Finlay Moodie and Mrs Sheila Ann Moodie, Great Britain. This scholarship supports students qualifying for Engineering and Medical examinations. The total amount awarded this year as part of this scholarship is INR 1097500.
